Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
by Cate Eales

Appeared December 10, 2009 on castanet.net

Track your packages, track Santa, and listen to some holiday tracks. This week’s column is full of Christmas Cheer!

Christmas Music
I am a big fan of traditional Christmas music, so I set out to find good, free Christmas music online. There is a wide selection!

The Garritan Community Christmas website has been producing a Christmas album each year since 2004. Each of those albums is available at the website, here.

Christmas Music

You can listen to the music online, or you can download any or all of the songs from any album. Bonus! They’ve included the cover art so you can make your own CD labels.

You can get more music from the Feels Like Christmas site, here. They offer both traditional and contemporary music, much of it contributed by independent artists. There are also a few stories available for download.

If you just want to listen and don’t want to download, try one of the internet radio stations. North Pole Radio steams Christmas music 365 days a year, but you don’t have to wait until July to decide that what you need is a little Christmas right this very minute. Point your browser here, and click on the “Listen Now” button.

AccuHolidays offers music grouped by “channels.” The “Silent Night” channel offers just about every version of Silent Night you could ever want. Pick “Old Fashioned Christmas,”, “Holiday Classical,” “Reggae” or any of a dozen others to specialize, or pick “Seasons Greetings” for a mishmash of all kinds of Christmas music. You can exclude an artist from any channel, so if you don’t want to hear Alvin and the Chipmunks, you don’t have to. Oh, and if you hear something you like, there are links to take you right to Amazon.com where you can buy the CD while still listening to the music. Listen here.

Package Tracking
Expecting something in the mail or by courier? If you have a tracking number, you can probably track it at PackageMapping.com. When you enter a tracking number from UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, and --- Yes! --- Canada Post you’ll get a map of your package’s progress. I love the little package with wings on it, heading for Kelowna!

Santa Tracking
I know I mention this site every year, but it’s just so much fun I’m going to mention it again. NORAD tracks Santa, and you can track Santa, too. If you go to the site now, you’ll see the Countdown to Track Santa. You can visit Santa’s Village to play some games, and as Christmas Eve approaches, you’ll be able to track Santa on that site, or on Google Earth.

The Missing Column
Readers who subscribe to this column should have received last week’s column as usual. Castanet readers missed out, however, because I goofed up and didn’t get the column to Castanet by deadline. My apologies to all concerned. If you want to read last week’s column, it’s available on my website, here.

Enjoy the holiday season, but try not to have as much fun as these guys!
