More Internet Explorer Help
by Cate Eales

Appeared February 27, 2012 on castanet.net

A recent column about Internet Explorer answered some of your questions and led to a flood of more questions. Keep them coming! This week’s answers: Yes, you can still get to your Favorites; It’s easy to turn the Menu Bar back on; Yes, it’s possible to get Internet Explorer to remember what size it’s supposed to be. Read on.

Where are the Favorites in Internet Explorer?
You’ve upgraded to Internet Explorer 9. Or, you’ve got a new computer with Internet Explorer for Windows 7 on it. Soon you’ll be asking the same question as this reader:

I downloaded Internet Explorer 9 and now I cannot see my Favorites, you know the star up on the left? I had a few important things saved there. Can I get back to IE8?

You can uninstall Internet Explorer 9, and when you do, you’ll end up with the version of Internet Explorer you had before, probably Internet Explorer 8. But it’s not that hard to find and display those Favorites in IE9. I made a screencast that shows you how to display those Favorites again, and how to uninstall the program if that’s what you really want to do.

Turn on the Menu Bar
Almost certainly, the next thing you’re going to wonder about is what the heck happened to the Menu Bar in Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, and even in Windows 7, it’s in there, but by default it’s just turned off. (The Menu Bar is near the top of a window, and shows choices for File Edit View Tools, and so on.) Why is it off by default? Beats me. The good news is it’s easy to turn it back on.

Just open the program where you want to restore the Menu Bar, for instance Internet Explorer. Then press the ALT key, and you’ll see the familiar choices displayed in the old familiar places. Nice trick, right? The problem is that as soon as you do anything, the Menu Bar goes into hiding again. If you want it there all the time:

bulletPress the ALT key
bulletClick on View | Toolbars
bulletPlace a check next to Menu Bar

There. That does it! Do the same thing in Windows Media Player to turn it on and keep it on. In Windows 7 explorer (same with Vista) it’s a little different. Click on Organize, then Layout, then place a check next to Menu Bar. You’re done!

Get Internet Explorer to remember the window size
Internet Explorer is really stupid when it comes to remembering the size and position of windows, especially "new" windows.  So try this, and see if it helps.  If it does, you might want to hang onto these instructions for the next time IE forgets what you like.

bulletClose all open Internet Explorer windows
bulletOpen one IE window again
bulletRight-click on any link and choose Open in New Window
bulletUse your mouse cursor to resize the new window and get it the way you want it
bulletIn that (new) window, hold down the Shift key and click on the X at the top right corner of the window to close it
bulletGet the original window the size you want it now, if it isn't already
bulletIn that (original) window, hold down the Shift key and click on the X at the top right corner of the window to close it

You might have to restart your computer for this to take effect, but once you do that, Internet Explorer should remember the size of both types of windows.
